why do we? pray? seriously?

well, here’s a list of what it’s not.

i’m going to go out on a limb and say that it’s not to get what we want.  { or maybe it shouldn’t be if it is.}  it’s not a magic formula that will produce the things that i want. although sometimes i get in a trap thinking, that if only i’d pray about this or like that, than such and such would come true… but that is not the purpose of prayer!

it’s not to be “religious” or something on the list of right things to do… prayer isn’t something that will make me “holier” or a “better person” because i say the right words or pray at the right times. nope… that may be what the pharasees did…

” And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward” Matt. 6:5

it’s not a list tell God about all the horrible things that are happening. we do that anyway, but He already knows what’s happening. He already knows what you need.

“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.” Matt. 6:7-8

it’s not a way you can guarantee anything in your life will work out perfectly. it’s not anything like what our society has come to think it is.

think on that today. think about your expectations of prayer. i’ll be doing some thinking and checking to see if my heart is in the right place. maybe tomorrow we’ll talk a little about what prayer is
