“Remember always, that He really likes the little vermin, and sets an absurd value on the distinctness of every single one of them. When He talks of their losing their selves, He only means abandoning the clamour of self-will; once they have done that, He really gives them back all their personality, and boasts(I am afraid, sincerely) that when they are wholly His they will be more themselves than ever.”

-CS Lewis, The Screwtape Letters {pg.65}

we are reading through The Screwtape Letters right now. talk about a very intriguing read! it’s a satire, kind of poking fun of the idea of temptation, but it also makes the idea the “evil side” very real. it’s mind twisting to think about our relationship with God backwards- the way a “devil” looks at us. it really makes you think.

i love this quote from the “teacher tempter” talking to the “novice tempter” about how God calls us to give up our self-will, to become entirely His, but when we do that, somehow, we become more ourselves than ever. as a little devil who really hates humans, he sees it as ridiculous. but i love the thought. to think that when we give up everything– which is so hard to do!- to give our hearts entirely to H I M , HE gives us back ourselves in a whole new way. i think that’s because when we become wholly HIS, we become who God created us to be in the first place, so wholly, entirely, completely ourselves in a new, beautiful way.

kind of cool to think about. :)
